Μοναχισμός στον Χριστιανισμό εννοείται το θρησκευτικό κίνημα των λαϊκών -κυρίως- που με βάση το κήρυγμα του Ιησού και την αποστολική γραμματεία αναζητούν την πνευματική τελειότητα (θεωση) μέσω της αναχώρησης από τα αστικά κέντρα και της καταφυγής σε ερημικούς τόπους. (Πηγή wikipedia)
Εντός του πλαισίου αυτού ο κάθε μοναχός δίνει τρεις υποσχέσεις ενώπιον του Θεού.
Οι τρεις αυτές υποσχέσεις-αρετές, Υπακοή, Παρθενία, Ακτημοσύνη, συνιστούν την ουσία της Ορθοδόξου ασκήσεως και οδηγούν στην ΦΙΛΟΘΕΐΑ,ΦΙΛΑΝΘΡΩΠΙΑ, η οποία πολεμά την μητέρα των τριών ισχυρών πόθων, ΦΙΛΟΔΟΞΙΑ,ΦΙΛΑΡΓΥΡΙΑ,ΦΙΛΗΔΟΝΊΑ, την ΦΙΛΑΥΤΙΑ.
